    How To Deploy System PulseMeter

    System PulseMeter Basics

System PulseMeter is designed using the following concepts:

    1. System PulseMeter Core (the Core) is installed and running on a server PC
    2. To perform all tests and actions other PCs you want to monitor must have System PulseMeter Agent (Agent) installed and running on them. You also can choose not to install the Agent and using SNMP Get tests instead, but in that case only specific SNMP tests can be performed, and no actions can be performed on remote hosts.
    3. A user can create tests and actions which can be performed by the Agent. In this case the Core sends request to the Agent, the Agent performs the request and returns the result to the Core. Generally, monitoring workflow on the deployed System PulseMeter system looks like on the following picture.

Using this system the user can design a set of tests which will check every important part or the entire network. Manage the network and view interactive statistics using one tool.

    Deploying

To deploy System PulseMeter system the following steps should be performed:

    1. Core should be installed on a server PC.
    2. Agents should be installed on every PC which needs to be monitored.
    3. Every Agent should be registered at the Core.
    4. Incoming connections over the Agent's working port (7171 by default) should be allowed at the Agent PC.
    5. Outgoing connections over all Agents working ports (if different) should be allowed at the Core PC.

    Core Modes

The Core can be installed and work in two modes: Service and Application.

    Service Mode

To install the Core as a service, please select the corresponding option in the installation file or start the spm.exe program executable file with /install switch.

While working as a service, the settings can not be changed and statistics can not be viewed. To manage setting or view statistics run the program in application mode (start spm.exe with no command line switches). While working as an application, the program continues it's usual activities (monitoring, performing actions, logging etc). In this case the program stops SPM Core service and starts it again when you exit the application mode.

When working as a service, the Core is started before the user session begins and continues performing if user logs out.

    Application Mode

When working as an application the core is started after the user is logs into the system and stops when user session is ended.
